Chemical Industries (Colombo) Limited, better known as CIC is a company which can boast of a long and eventful history in Sri Lanka since its inception in the late 1940's. Formerly known as ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) Limited, a subsidiary of Imperial Chemicals Industries Plc. UK, its name was changed to CIC in 1964 when the majority of its shares were taken over by Sri Lankans. CIC has seen many winds of change over the last 4 decades and has proudly stood the test of time to grow into one of Sri Lanka's long standing companies with a wide range of interests.
 
Commencing with the manufacture of 'Alkathene' agricultural plastic pipes in the late 1940's and the marketing of a range of ICI paints manufactured locally by Paints and General Industries Ltd. In 1967, it is involved today in Agribusiness, Fertilizers, Seeds, Agro Chemicals, Paints & Surface Coatings, Adhesives, Industrial raw materials, Consumer products, Packaging, Pharmaceuticals, Health & Personal Care products, Animal feeds ,Water Tanks, etc.,
 
 
In 1967, CIC was housed in the Standard Chartered building in Fort and 1993, it moved to its own building "CIC House" complete with all modern facilities. Its Ratmalana Factory came up in 1967 and its warehouse complex at Kotahena in 1982. CIC which stared operations with an employee base of approximately 60 in 1964 has over 200 employees today excluding those at its subsidiaries and associate companies.
 
 
Though CIC is essentially a Sri Lankan company, it has always been associated with ICI of UK and is represented by it even today through its nominee director in the Board of Directors.
 
 
CIC considers its staff an invaluable asset and therefore makes every possible effort to ensure proper recruitment, training, development and career advancement. When recruiting staff special attention is paid to career advancement and development in addition to suiting them into proper channels. The management recognizes the rights of workers to air their grievances and to have them examined and reminded. Training programs are considered to result in high employee satisfaction and in turn to increase productivity. Loyalty, dedicated and long service is rewarded my merit, incentive and long service awards etc. Two way communications between management and workers and CEO and Trade Union representatives is encouraged and all levels of management are responsible for the personnel function and are expected to know the methods of dealing with their problems and situations.

This means that they pay great attention to identifying and satisfying customer needs and achieving front runner status in Customer Care. As a company involved in the formulation and manufacturing of pesticides, pipes, paint lattices and adhesives, CIC ensures the safety and health of it's plants by carrying out it's operations in a safe and effective manner and in accordance with a Safety, Health and Environment policy (SHE). As a result for successfully implementing the SHE policy CIC was awarded the National Safety Award twice in the past.
